Interesting Facts about Jaipur

  • Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II founded the city on 18th November 1727.
  • Jaipur is considered as the first planned city of India. It was planned by a Bengali architect, Vidhyadhar Bhattacharya in accordance to Shilpa Shastra (the science of Indian architecture).
  • The city was painted in terracotta pink as a grand welcome to the Prince of Wales by Maharaja Ram Singh. Since then it gained a unique identity as the Pink City.
  • Vastu Shastra, the vedic planning of the Hindus adopted for the comfort and prosperity has also been incorporated in the planning.
  • Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur constructed five astronomical observatories or Jantar Mantars between 1727 and 1734. The largest out of five Jantar Mantars is in Jaipur. They are an amazing combination of geometric forms captivating artists, historians and architects round the world.
