Topography of Jaipur

Jaipur is the capital city of Rajasthan. It lies on the eastern border of the semi-arid land of Thar Desert. The state shares international borders with Pakistan on the west. It is one of the biggest states in the country housing Jaipur that happens to be one of the well planned cities in India. The city is surrounded on the three sides by the Aravali hills, thus bringing relief against the rough desert. It is placed at an altitude of 1417 feet above the sea level. It is bordered by Sikar and Mahendragarh district in the north, Tonk in the south, Alwar, Dausa and Sawai Madhopur in the east and Nagaur and Ajmer district in the west.

The pink city is measured 180 km from east to west and 110 km from north to south. Banganga and Sabi are the two main rivers passing through Jaipur. About 28.65 million cubic meter ground water resources are available. The Ramgarh dam on the River Banganga provides drinking water to the old city. Copper, iron, dolomite, white marble, glass and silicon are the main minerals found. Sambhar Lake is the only natural lake with salty water. It acts as the main source of salt extraction in the city.

Layout of Jaipur

The city is probably the first planned city of India. Maharaj Sawai Jai Singh II with the help of a Bengal architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya planned out the city in 1727. The streets are divided into six sectors separated by 34 m (111 ft.) wide broad streets. These sectors are known as urban quarters. They are further segmented by interconnecting streets. There are a total of five quarters around the east, west and southern sides of the City Palace. The sixth quarter enfold right away to the east. The palace surrounds Hawa Mahal, formal gardens, and a small lake. The Nahargarh Fort acts as cherry on the beautiful and mighty Aravali hill in the northwest end of the city. It used to be home to King Sawai Jai Singh II.

Jaipur is wonderfully located on the map of India as other main cities of the country can be reached easily through the various modes of transport running in the city.
